13 Jun Celebrating Hamar’s Global Game Jam record
Although Norway is a small country with only 0,08 percent of the world’s population, Hamar Game Collective’s Global Game Jam 2016 still managed the feat of grabbing a position on the global Top 20 list in competition with 630 game jam sites in 93 different countries.
– This is the eigth year we are hosting Global Game Jam in Hamar, and it just keeps on getting better and better. We managed to almost double the attendance compared with last year and are overwhelmed and happy that we managed to get on the list of the Top 20 game jam sites, says general manager Runa Haukland at Hamar Game Collective.
6th largest in Europe
The event was fully booked two weeks in advance and the 211 participants made Global Game Jam in Hamar the biggest in the Nordics, the 6th largest in Europe and the 16th largest Game Jam in the world.
Part of the success at Hamar is also to be contributed to the keynote speakers Terrance Cohen from Execution Labs/Riot Games (League of Legends) and Chet Faliszek from Valve. Chet also demonstrated VR and HTC Vive all through the weekend. Tobii Eye X presented their technology and the participants could also test and work with equipment from Oculus Rift and MaKey.
The theme for Global Game Jam 2016 was “ritual”, and 39 different games were made in Hamar during the weekend. The participants were a mix of students and professional game developers from all over Norway.
Raising the bar for 2017
This year’s success is now a great motivation for the preparations for next year’s event.
– The challenge now is to top this – we are planning for an even greater event in 2017, says project manager Marianne Lerdahl at Hamar Game Collective:
