17 Mar HGC at GDC
From March 2nd to 6th, most of the games industry gathered in San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference. As it’s one of the biggest industry events, we all jumped on planes and left our freezing cold homeland behind for a week in the sun with our peers.
Most of the HGC member studios were represented at GDC this year, as well as a mindblowing number of our fellow Norwegian developers. Most of them had set up shop at GDC Play to showcase their games, and the ones we spoke to said they got a lot of good feedback. Our own Sarepta Studio earned an Honorable Mention from the panel of GDC Best in Play, and could decorate their stand with a badge.
Sarepta was also nominated for four awards at the Game Connection Developer Awards, and took home the prize for “Most Promising IP” for their game Shadow Puppeteer! We’re super proud of them, of course, and it’s great to see that this game gets some of the recognition it deserves!
One of our one-man-teams, Tinimations, travelled to the States for the first time ever to attend GDC to showcase his game Klang. He also ended up going to SXSW right after as well, where he met Brian Crecente from Polygon and got a really positive article written about his game. You can read it here.
The guys from Krillbite decided to stay a little while longer in San Francisco, to hang out with the wonderful people at Double Fine. Working on their own semi-unannounced project Mosaic from the Double Fine offices turned out to be quite a rewarding experience! Double Fine set aside a lot of time to provide valuable input and feedback on the project.
From what we heard, our fellow Norwegian developers had a great time, too. Our friends in Rock Pocket Games released Shiftlings on March 3rd, and we’d like to take a moment to congratulate them on their release! Shiftlings also earned an Honorable Mention at GDC Best in Play, and Earthlock: Festival of Magic from Snowcastle and Owlboy from D-pad Studio both won “Best in Play”.
Apart from winning awards and doing networking and going to talks and manning booths, we also had some time to tour the great city of San Francisco. Some of the beauty of the wonderful chaos that is GDC is that you make it what you want it to be, and a lot of the time was spent outside in the beautiful weather, meeting developers from all over the world.
It’s been a great GDC for all of us, and we’re really looking forward to go back next year!
